About the Academy

6 weeks
Fully-funded*
Online, self-directed
Accredited qualification

The Energy Advisor Academy is an online training programme that helps you build the knowledge and skills to support people with their energy use. You’ll learn how to help others take control of their bills, improve home energy efficiency, and access the right support - particularly for those who need extra help to stay warm and well.

By completing the programme, you’ll earn the Level 3 Award in Energy Awareness - an industry-recognised qualification that allows you to offer official energy advice. You’ll also have the chance to gain the Level 2 Award in Fuel Debt Advice in the Community, which equips you to support people dealing with, or at risk of, fuel debt.

Energy Advisors are trusted, practical problem-solvers. They break down complex information, offer clear guidance, and support people facing difficult decisions about energy and affordability. The work is about people as much as it is about energy.

*While the training is fully funded, we ask for a fully refundable £80 deposit if you're offered a place - this simply ensures limited spaces are reserved for those ready to commit. Please see the Programme details and the FAQ sections below for more information.

We know making a career change - or starting something new - can bring up a lot of questions. Whether you're curious about what energy advisors actually do, how the training works, or what to expect from the application process, we've got you covered.

If you don’t see your question here, feel free to get in touch at training@greenworkx.org - we’re always here to help.

What do energy advisor actually do?

Energy Advisors play a key role in tackling fuel poverty and the energy crisis, making a positive impact on sustainability efforts across the country. Their work typically includes:

  • Conducting home visits and phone consultations to understand residents' energy usage and identify areas for improvement.
  • Providing tailored advice on how to reduce utility bills, switch suppliers, access discounts, and change energy consumption behaviours.
  • Installing small, practical energy-saving measures such as LED light bulbs and draft-proofing to immediately improve energy efficiency.
  • Raising awareness about available support, including grants and funding schemes, and assisting homeowners with accessing funded energy improvements like loft insulation or heating upgrades.
What is not included in responsibilities of an energy advisor?

It can be confusing to make sense of the differences between different roles in the energy and retrofit space when you’re new to it! Let’s clear up some common misconceptions:

Energy advisors don’t:

  • Inspect or assess the energy efficiency of buildings or produce EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) reports. This is the job of a Domestic Energy Assessor.
  • Inspect or assess the energy efficiency of buildings or produce EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) reports. This is the job of a Domestic Energy Assessor.
  • Offer advice on major repairs, or provide expertise on electrical or plumbing work.
  • Promote or sell specific products or services—we focus on impartial advice to help individuals save energy and reduce costs, not on promoting brands or products.
  • Install or carry out energy-saving measures (such as insulation or heating upgrades). Energy Advisors provide guidance and advice but do not perform installations.
  • Handle legal or financial services such as credit counselling or debt collection. We guide people on available support options but do not provide professional financial or legal advice.
Is it possible to go through the training in less than 6 weeks?

We understand that some people are eager to move quickly - so yes, a fast-tracked timeline may be possible. If you have the availability, strong time management skills, and can demonstrate you're ready to commit, we’re happy to explore this with you.

Just keep in mind that a shorter timeline also depends on the scheduling of live webinars and assessments, which may vary.

When does the 3-day webinar take place?

The Fuel Debt Advice in the Community course is delivered as a live, instructor-led webinar over 3 consecutive days, with each session lasting around 2.5 hours. This usually takes place within the first two weeks of your training, although exact dates may vary depending on instructor availability.

Confirmed dates for upcoming cohorts are listed in the application form once you select your preferred start date.

What does the application process look like?

We keep things simple and human—our process is designed to get to know you, how you learn, work with others, and what’s driving your interest in this space.

  1. Start with the application form
This takes about 10-15 minutes and focuses on who you are - your motivation, learning style, and what draws you to this opportunity.
  2. Complete a short registration form
Once you apply, you’ll get an email with a quick follow-up form (3 minutes) asking for your contact details, CV, and current circumstances and preferences. This must be completed within 24 hours for your application to be considered.
  3. Record a short video interview
If eligible, you’ll be invited to answer a few short questions by video. You’ll have up to 48 hours and can re-record your responses before submitting.
  4. Final video call with our team
A short conversation with someone from the Greenworkx team - your chance to ask questions, and our chance to get any final clarity before next steps.
Will I get a job if I do the training?

While we can’t promise a job at the end, we offer strong employment support to help you take the next step. This includes CV and interview guidance, AI-powered practice tools, and connections to employers through the Greenworkx Talent Pool. Our goal is to give you the tools, confidence, and visibility to successfully transition into work.

Does Greenworkx guarantee I’ll get invited to job interviews?

We don’t guarantee interviews, as securing one depends on various factors, including employer needs and candidate fit. However, we provide robust support to help increase your chances, such as CV tips, interview prep, and connections to employers.

Why do I need to pay a deposit to join the programme?

The £80 deposit is required to confirm your place in the Energy Advisor Academy. It demonstrates your commitment to the training and helps us manage enrolments effectively, ensuring that participants who are serious about completing the programme are given priority. The deposit is fully refundable when you successfully complete the training, as outlined in the Terms & Conditions.

What our Academy graduates say

Hear from Emily and Sylvester - our Academy graduates, who are now working as Energy Advisors.

The Energy Advisor Academy put me in the position to do what I do. Everything I do goes back what I learned in that programme – I’ve been building on that knowledge but the foundation was the Academy and it came at a perfect time.

I wasn’t sure how I would transition from the theoretical to the practical, and wasn’t sure I’d be good enough, but I received fantastic support and encouragement from the Greenworkx team. I’m very grateful for this.

Sylvester

Being an Energy Advisor is a really rewarding job, I speak to people from all sorts of places, all sorts of backgrounds and ages, and I get to help them - which is really, really great. I love being able to help people with no catch, just helping people to have better lives - it’s amazing!

Greenworkx were fantastic, hugely supportive. From helping through the course to even helping me find a job! I really cannot thank them enough.
